Amended Return FAQs
How long does an amended return take?
Can every 1040-X be e-filed?
Most recent-year amendments can be e-filed; older years or certain changes may require a paper mail-in.
We’ll advise which method applies after review.
If I owe more tax, will there be penalties or interest?
Interest typically accrues from the original due date on any additional tax owed.
Penalties may apply depending on the situation and timing. Paying as soon as possible generally reduces costs.
Will filing an amendment delay my original refund?
If your original return is still processing, the amendment is handled separately and may not update the original refund timeline.
Use IRS
Where’s My Refund (WMR)
for the original and WMAR for the amendment.
Do I need to amend my state return too?
If your federal changes flow to your state, you may need a state amendment. We’ll let you know and prepare it if required.
What documents should I provide for an amendment?
See the checklist above. At minimum: a copy of your originally filed return, the corrected/new documents, and any IRS/state letters.
