Common questions
Amended Return FAQs
How long does an amended return take?
The IRS generally advises allowing 8–12 weeks, although some amendments can take up to 16 weeks. It may take up to 3 weeks after filing for the amendment to appear in the IRS status system.
Can every Form 1040‑X be e-filed?
No. E-file availability depends on the tax year, the original return, the forms being changed, and IRS system rules. When an amendment is not eligible for e-file, we prepare a mail-ready package with filing instructions.
If I owe more tax, could there be penalties or interest?
Possibly. Interest generally applies to unpaid tax from the original due date, and penalties may apply depending on the circumstances. We explain the amendment’s estimated impact, but the IRS or state makes the final calculation.
Will filing an amendment delay my original refund?
An amended return is processed separately. If the original return is still processing, we may recommend waiting until it is completed before submitting the amendment unless a deadline or notice requires earlier action.
Do I need to amend my state return too?
Often, a federal change also affects the state return. We review the change and tell you whether a related state amendment appears necessary. State preparation is priced separately when applicable.
What documents should I provide?
Provide the complete original return, every corrected or newly received tax document, any notices, and records that support the change. Additional documents may be requested after review.
